Difference No.1: Origin – Yoga Cuckfield

Yoga is much older than Pilates, it’s over 5000 years old, originating in India it has over the centuries developed into many different types and now is much better known in the Western world.

Pilates on the other hand is much younger, beginning in the mid 20th Century, Pilates originates more from a dance background, it is focused more on enhancing performance and targeting specific muscles and improving their strength

Difference No.2: Mind, Body & Spirit – Yoga Cuckfield

Both Yoga and Pilates recognise that the mind and body are connecting and they both explore the connection deeply. Yoga however delves into a third connection, the spirit. During meditation stages and also during practice, yoga is much more focused on connecting this third element into practice. Whereas Pilates is more focused on strengthening and support the body whilst also quieting the mind.

Difference No. 3: Relax or Workout – Yoga Cuckfield

Although Yoga can be a real workout, and here at Linear Health & Fitness we offer Power Yoga classes that are designed to do exactly that, often they are much more focused on relaxing, destressing and meditating. Whereas on the other hand, Pilates is much more of a workout. It focuses on aligning the spine and strengthening the core whereas Yoga focuses on all the muscles of the body.

Difference No. 3: Breathing Techniques – Yoga Cuckfield

Yoga has a wide range of breathing techniques and the practice itself is much more focused around the breath and therefore relaxing and destressing. Pilates also focuses on breath but puts less emphasis on it than yoga.
